Do you find yourself scrolling on TikTok but finding a lot of irrelevant or unappealing content? Algorithms aren’t perfect. These tips can help filter out content that isn’t right for you on TikTok for a better experience

1 Block Accounts You Don’t Want to See

If you’re looking to avoid a certain account on TikTok, you can completely block the account. This will prevent you from seeing any content from that account.

To block an account on TikTok, go to that account’s page, click the arrow in the top right corner, and select Block from the bottom row of options.

2 Select Not Interested on Irrelevant Posts

To avoid different types of content, you can select “Not interested” on photos or videos that you don’t want to see. This may be helpful if, for example, you’re not a gamer but keep seeing content about video games. To do this, press and hold down on the video or photo, then click the broken heart that says Not Interested. This will signal to the algorithm to not show this type of content while you’re scrolling.

If the For You page isn’t recommending content that you’re interested in, try changing your FYP to fit your preferences. This includes rewatching content you enjoy and commenting on posts you like.

Sometimes the comment section on TikTok can be a toxic trip. If you want to hide offensive comments or spam from bots on the content you post, TikTok has a setting for this. Go to your profile, click the three horizontal bars at the top right, select Settings and privacy > Privacy > Comments, and then click the toggle for Filter spam and offensive comments.

If you activate this setting, you will have the choice to manually approve any comments that TikTok identifies as offensive or spam.

TikTok also has a setting to filter certain keywords from comments under your own content. For instance, if you’re tired of hearing about a certain topic, you can restrict these comments.

To use this feature, go to your profile, click the three horizontal bars at the top right, select Settings and privacy > Privacy > Comments, and then click the toggle for Filter keywords. You can then click the bar that says Add keywords and select any words you’d like to automatically hide from your comment section.

After you activate this setting, you can manually approve any comments that use the filtered keywords.

5 Filter Video Keywords

If you’d like to avoid content with certain keywords while scrolling, TikTok has a feature that allows you to do this. To filter video keywords, go to your profile, click the three horizontal bars at the top right, select Settings and privacy > Content preferences > Filter video keywords, and then click on Add keyword.

On this screen, you can select single words you’d like to filter from content. For example, you could filter “gaming” from your feed by typing that word into the box. From there, you can select if you’d like to filter out that content from your For You page, Following, Friends, and/or STEM page. If your friend posts gaming content, but you don’t want to see other people’s gaming content, you can just hide the gaming keyword on your For You page.

While this is a great way to fine-tune the content TikTok shows you, but you can also completely reset your For You page to start from scratch.

6 Mute Accounts

Finally, if you want to stop receiving notifications about an account’s content, you can mute post notifications from that account. Go to that account’s page, click the bell icon in the top right corner, and select None from the list of options.

You can train the TikTok algorithm to show content that is related to your interests with these tips. Next time you see content that doesn’t align with your hobbies, you’ll know what to do.
